Coronavirus Lockdown Measures Create a Boom for E-commerce

The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on lives and businesses across the globe. With some businesses struggling, others have seen a sharp increase in demand, with e-commerce being one notable area where demand is higher than ever.

E-commerce surges in lockdown

Lockdown measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic mean that consumers have been inevitably turning to e-commerce for their purchases. Even market segments like the over-60's, that traditionally resist buying online have begun to use online purchasing in the absence of other safe options.

The result is that e-commerce businesses are seeing sales close to – and in some cases higher than – Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale. According to Adobe's Digital Economy Index, the US e-commerce sector experienced a 49% increase in April.

Businesses that have adapted quickly have been able to take advantage of this change in behavior. For example, local butchers, bookshops, restaurants that never offered home delivery before have been able to create delivery services and curbside pickup.

Businesses who never used social media or perhaps never even had a website before have faced a steep learning curve to stay available to their customers. Still, those who rose to the challenge are reaping the rewards. Google's ad credit program for SMBs has further boosted businesses ready to embrace digital marketing and improve their online presence.

What are people buying?

It's not just the method of purchasing that's changing – lockdown has seen changes to consumer's priorities too. Sales of luggage and swimwear have declined as people have less need for it when they are unable to make trips, and sales of outdoor clothing have also dropped. Items related to home cooking, food, health, hygiene, home décor, and home exercise have all seen a sharp increase in demand. Grocery is perhaps the biggest winner, with wine and spirits experiencing a 74% increase in online sales from March 11 through April 21.

While the balance of demand for certain goods such as outdoor clothing will likely level out after the crisis has passed, consumer's preference for e-commerce is likely to stick around with web and social media remaining key sales channels. A prolonged lockdown could see some bricks and mortar stores shut, meaning continued demand for e-commerce goods and services after lockdown ends.
